A Painting is Worth a Thousand Words…
“Of what?” I ask.
“I am afraid to take that first stroke on the canvas. – Can I use a pencil? – I might mess up.”
I have heard people say time and time again.
“Don’t worry about messing up! Acrylic Paint is so forgiving,” I always reply.
This scene that I have witnessed over and over always leads me to ponder this question …
Why is a blank canvas so intimidating?
I have been doodling and painting for as long as I can remember and I can still get intimidated by a blank canvas. Maybe because paintings tell a story and sharing a part of ourselves in this way can feel a little scary.
I have been teaching paint workshops and paint parties to children and adults for about 10 years now. Sometimes the participants follow along and paint the same paintings and other times I lead them through a meditation/visualization where they come up with an image and they all create their own paintings.
People tell stories about themselves as they paint. Even when we are painting the same painting, no two are ever alike. Each person adds their own unique twist and tells a story that can only come from them.
When I first started teaching paint workshops and parties, people would say to me,”Not everyone can learn to paint on canvas!” As if painting on canvas is only for a select few.
My response was always – “With the right instruction anyone who is interested can do it. But more important than the instruction is giving people the space to create and the gift of believing they can do it.”
Painting is a safe place to express yourself. It helps you understand your emotions and your story. It brings you into the present moment, which can help lower stress levels.
I have had the honor of helping hundreds of people tap into their creativity and tell their story by guiding them to pick up a paintbrush and take that first courageous paint stroke on the canvas.
It is amazing how people can start out with a blank canvas and on only 2 to 3 hours they can transform the canvas into a story that only they can tell.
So call or email me today at 302.419.6401 or firstname.lastname@example.org if you would like to plan a paint party – either a paint along or a workshop where you come up with your own painting. It is fun and relaxing at the same time.
I will give you space to create and believe in you! I can’t wait to see your story on canvas!
Also, if you know any new moms or moms to be, please pass along this workshop that I will be teaching at the Birth Center in Wilmington, DE.
Paint Night – Paint Your Birth or Pregnancy Story
Birth Center – Wilmington, DE
Friday, October 27th 6 pm – 9 pm
$35 per person includes all materials
You will be led through the painting process – a meditation/visualization, a thumbnail sketch and a finished painting on canvas. The meditation will help you come up with a symbol or image from your birth or pregnancy experience and I will help you transform this vision into a painting on canvas that tells your story.
I will teach you basic painting techniques and then I will guide you through the thumbnail sketch and finished painting. Each of you will be creating your own unique painting from your visualization. You can display your masterpiece in a special place in your home – maybe even the nursery.
If you would like to bring a friend along who doesn’t have a birth or pregnancy experience, he or she may do the meditation/visualization and come up with a painting from a special time in their life.Sign Up for the Paint Your Birth or Pregnancy Story – Paint Night!
